  • Notes
    • 1870 Census shows birthplace is Indiana. However all other census records for John M Powers show father is from Ireland. Either:
1 set of census records is wrong OR
James Powers is head of household in 1870 but not father of John
The 1860 Census shows specifically, Waterford, Ireland to be birthplace.

From 1845-1850 large numbers of people left Ireland because of the "Great Famine", also known as the "Potato Famine". Born in 1812, James would have been 33 in 1845. He married in Alabama in 1849, so I am estimating the time of his emigration to America to be around 1845-1847.

The Powers (or Power) family was large in Waterford, so it is very possible that other Powers emigrated before James and sent back money to help him come, which was a common practice at the time.

Incidiently, Waterford, Ireland is famous for Waterford Crystal.
    • (Research):Saved in Ancestry.com shoebox- record in "The Boston Pilot 1831-1920" missing friend posting for James Powers published 1866, looking for "JAmes Powers, of Gerrentown, parish of Ballylahane, county of Waterford, who left Ireland in the fall of 1847, and lived in Brown County, Illinois. Left home in the spring of 1861 and went South; wrote in June the same year from Memphis, TN" His mother requested to notify his brother-in-law, Richard Cooke, Mount Sterling, Brown County, Illinois.

Although this is probably not him because of the 1861 date (he was in Alabama then), it may be a clue to his family connections and where in Waterford he was from.
